“Illusion That we call Perfection”

Summer 2024 taught me an important life lesson.  PERFECTION IS AN ILLUSION. If you’ve ever felt like nothing you did mattered because it didn’t fit the pre-written definition of a perfect person, a perfect life then this collection will speak to you.

I grew up in an extremely competitive country that shaped my understanding of self-worth through the lens of achievement and conformity. The society was such that praise was reserved for those who excelled academically, and good grades became synonymous with being a "good kid." Conversations amongst adults often revolved around scores and accolades, while any form of dissent was discouraged. Looking a certain way was another component of this unspoken code. Appearance, much like performance, was a marker of acceptance and value. Those who adhered to the norms were celebrated, while anyone who expressed individuality faced scrutiny.

Even though my parents always encouraged me to pursue my dreams, the environment instilled a relentless drive for perfection in me - which in my young adult brain was pursuing either Engineering or Medicine. I internalized the belief that only perfection is worthy of appreciation and that love and value both come from success. It wasn't just about being smart or talented; it was about fitting a mold that felt increasingly restrictive over time. I batteled with this school of thought well into my thirties and found myself yearning for authenticity in a space that valued facade over honesty.

I denied that I wanted to be an artist my entire life, convinced that pursuing engineering and management was the path I was meant to follow. I earned accolades, climbed the corporate ladder working in Wall Street, and built a career that many would desire. Yet, despite the outward success, a part of me remained unfulfilled. It was suffocating to say the least and I was forced to begin my journey of reflection which ultimately prompted a desire to reclaim my narrative, moving away from a definition of self that was heavily influenced by external pressures. It was clear to me that the true measure of a person extends far beyond the idea of perfection; it encompasses individuality, resilience, and the courage to speak one’s truth.

In my quest for perfection, I’ve grasped at fleeting moments, trying to arrange them into something flawless. I meticulously planned outings, believing that each detail needed to align perfectly to create joy. Yet, what I found was that the most memorable instances were those not scripted. They were the laughter shared over spilled drinks, muddy paw prints on our prestine white couch and the beauty of an imperfect sunset that made me cry.

Summer 2024 was a reminder that rather than striving for unattainable ideals that are deemed perfect by someone who I don’t even know, it is the tears and pain, the authenticity of the moment—the laughter, the surprise, the messy, vibrant reality—that infuses life with meaning. It is within this context that I learned to appreciate the art of living—in the spontaneity, in the imperfect, and in the beautiful chaotic existence.

This collection represents a significant journey for me in embracing imperfection. As I worked on this series, I was faced with the challenge of intentionally leaving cracks and unevenness visible, allowing the various layers of paint to shine through. The creative process is cathartic as it requires me to confront my preconceived notions of beauty and quality. Rooted in imperfection, while celebrating the beauty found in the unexpected, this collection features mismatched frames and background colors, creating a dynamic and layered visual experience. The intentional irregularities invite viewers to embrace the notion that there is no such thing as perfection. This collection encourages appreciation for the charming unpredictability of life and art, making every piece a conversation starter filled with character and depth.

I want this collection to be a poignant reminder that acceptance is the foundation upon which true joy is built. Through colors, intricate textures, and layered meanings, I invite you to embrace your own journey with an open heart.

Art is more than decoration; it is a reflection of our experiences and emotions. Each work in this collection tells a story of struggle and resilience, illustrating the beauty that arises from facing our challenges. As you explore these pieces, I hope you will feel a connection that resonates with your own path of self-discovery and acceptance.

Love,

Purvi
